Newcastle-upon-Tyne is commonly known as
Newcastle. The
city is located in the North east of England, on the north bank of the
River Tyne. The city has an approximate population of 280,000 residents.
Newcastle is well known for
its shopping. With a variety of high street stores, popular designer stores and
independent stores. The city is also home to many shopping centres with one of
their most popular being the Eldon
Square shopping centre.
Newcastle
United Football Club is known as the Magpies and plays its home games and St.
James’ Park. Stars of the club in recent years include Alan Shearer, Andy Cole
and Paul Gascoigne.
One
of Newcastle’s
housing developments is Ralph Erskine's Byker Wall, designed in the 1960s and
now Grade II listed. It is on UNESCO's list of outstanding 20th century
buildings.
Newcastle is also home to many
cultural attractions including Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, the largest
gallery of its type in the world. Other popular cultural attractions include
the Hatton Gallery, National Glass Centre and Bedes World.
Newcastle is home to many
famous past and present residents including Cheryl Cole (singer/dancer), who
was born in the city in the Walker
district. Others incude Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly (TV presenters) and
Sarah Millican (comedian).
