Sudbury is a
small market town in Suffolk,
located on the River Stour. It is approximately 60 miles north east of London and has an
approximate population of 13,000 people.
Sudbury’s famous water meadows
feature ancient paths and land that has been grazed on for over 1000 years.
Sudbury was established as a
market town in 1009AD. The town tells its history through many attractions,
including the Sudbury Heritage Centre and Museum, which features paintings in
galleries including works by local artist Thomas Gainsborough. The museum also
features many other exhibitions related to Thomas Gainsborough’s life.
Each September a twenty four mile
stretch of the River Stour hosts hundreds of canoers for ‘Sudbury To The Sea’,
which finishes at Cattawade.
One of the most famous past
residents of Sudbury is Thomas Gainsborough, an
18th century painter who was born in the town but later moved to London. Others include
Alex Trebek (actor), Lisa Cichelly (producer) and Jason Frederick (musician).
