Berkshire is
a county in southeast England, located to the west of London. Berkshire has
also been known as the ‘Royal county Berkshire’ since the early 19th
century, because of the connection to the Royal family through Windsor Castle.
Reading is
the county town and Berkshire is home to many smaller villages, including
Aldworth which is well known for its Church of England Parish Church which has
on display numerous life size monuments to the De La Beche family. Because some
of them are so large they are often referred to as the Aldworth Giants.
A popular
tourist attraction in Berkshire is Runnymede, owned by the National Trust. As
well as being a place of great natural beauty Runnymede is home to the ancient
‘meeting meadow’, where King John is said to have sealed the Magna Carta in
1215.
Berkshire
has many famous current and former residents including Elton John, Oscar Wilde,
Kate Winslet and Will Young. Perhaps most famously, Berkshire is home the
Middleton family. Catherine (Kate) Middleton grew up in Chapel Row near Newbury
in Berkshire. Since marrying Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, she is known as
Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.
