Fife is a
historical county, commonly refered to as the Kingdon of Fife. It is located in
the Scottish Lowlands. The county covers 512 square miles and has a population
of approximately 400,000 people.
The town of
St Andrews is located in the northeast of Fife. It is well known for being home
to the University of St Andrews, one of the most ancient universities in the
world and the university of choice for Prince William. It was at St Andrews
where the prince met Kate Middleton, his future wife.
Fife is also
world famous for its golf. Featuring more than 45 golf courses, including some
of the oldest courses in the world, it is St Andrews again that is the focus of
activity. The Old Course in St Andrews is approximately 600 years old.
Fife has many historical attractions such as Abbott House and Dunfermline Abbey,
where Robert the Bruce is buried.
Gordon Brown, former British Prime Minister and Chancellor of the
Exchequer is a famous Fifian. Fife has been home to a number of other famous
people including famous Scottish painter Joseph Paton (1821-1901), who is well
known for his paintings including Sermon on the Mount, The Bluidie Tryst and
Calvary.
Fife is
located between Firth of Tay and Firth of Forth and borders Perth and Kinross
and Clackmannanshire.
