Norfolk is a county in the east of England, bordering Lincolnshire
to the west, Cambridgeshire to the south west and Suffolk to the south. The county town of Norfolk is the city of Norwich. The county covers a total area of
2,014 miles and is home to close-to a million people.
Other towns
are Cromer, Hunstanton and Stalham.
Norfolk is a popular tourist destination, boasting many
seaside resorts such as the beach at Holkham National Nature reserve, which is
between Blakeney and Burnham Overy Staithe on the Norfolk coast. Other beaches are Great
Yarmouth and Waxham.
Norfolk is also well known for being home to a number of
historical attractions including the Norwich
Castle, which is one of the city’s
most famous landmarks and was built by the Normans over 900 years ago.
The Queen's
residence at Sandrigham, Sandringham House, is open to tourists all year round.
It was purchased by Queen Victoria
in 1862.
Diana,
Princes of Wales, Prince Charles’ first wife, was born and grew up near Sandringham.
The Norfolk
Broads are another tourist attraction. They are a network of rivers and lakes
covering 117 square miles. They have a similar to protection and status to a
National Park.
Norfolk’s famous
residents have included Elizabeth Fry, who was well known for her works to help
the lives of women prisoners, Stephen Fry (broadcaster), Robert Greene (actor),
Martin Brundle (Formula 1 racing driver) and Nick Dempsey (windsurfer).
