is located in the west midlands of England; the county has a total
area of 763 square miles and an approximate population of 600,000 people.
Warwickshire is approximately 100 miles from London. The county town of Warwickshire is Warwick and the largest town is Nuneaton.
Warwickshireis bordered by Gloucestershire to the south west, Worcestershire and the West
Midlands to the west, Staffordshire to the north west, Leicestershire to the north
east, Northamptonshire to the east and Oxfordshire to the south.
The market
towns of Atherstone, Bedworth, Nuneaton and Rugby
were industrialised in the 19th century - major industries included
coal mining, textiles, engineering and cement production.
Stratford-upon-Avon, well known as the home of William
Shakespear, is perhaps the county’s best known town and a very popular tourist
attraction. The town sits on the River Avon which flows through the middle of
town. The river was once a key trade route, linked to the canal network for the
Midlands. The focal point for many on the
River Avon is the facade of The Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
Warwickshire’s
other historical sites include Kenilworth
Castle and Elizabethan
gardens, parts of which date back to 1575. Others include Walton Hall and
Stoneleigh Abbey.
The most
known person from Warwickshire is William Shakespeare, who was born and grew up
in Stratford-upon-Avon. Other famous residents
over the years include, Clive Owen (actor), Rupert Brooke (rugby player) and
Phillip Larkin (poet).
