Warwickshire is located in the west midlands of England; the county has a total area of 763 square miles and an approximate population of 600,000 people. Warwickshire is approximately 100 miles from London. The county town of Warwickshire is Warwick and the largest town is Nuneaton.

Warwickshireis bordered by Gloucestershire to the south west, Worcestershire and the West Midlands to the west, Staffordshire to the north west, Leicestershire to the north east, Northamptonshire to the east and Oxfordshire to the south.

The market towns of Atherstone, Bedworth, Nuneaton and Rugby were industrialised in the 19th century - major industries included coal mining, textiles, engineering and cement production.

Stratford-upon-Avon, well known as the home of William Shakespear, is perhaps the county’s best known town and a very popular tourist attraction. The town sits on the River Avon which flows through the middle of town. The river was once a key trade route, linked to the canal network for the Midlands. The focal point for many on the River Avon is the facade of The Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Warwickshire’s other historical sites include Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan gardens, parts of which date back to 1575. Others include Walton Hall and Stoneleigh Abbey.

The most known person from Warwickshire is William Shakespeare, who was born and grew up in Stratford-upon-Avon. Other famous residents over the years include, Clive Owen (actor), Rupert Brooke (rugby player) and Phillip Larkin (poet).
