Wiltshire is
a ceremonial county located in the south west of England
approximately 100 miles from central London.
The county has a total area of 1,346 square miles and an approximate population
of 600,000 people. Wiltshire borders several other counties including Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire.
The county town of Wiltshire is Wilton.
Wiltshire is
famous for being home to the first safari park in England:
Longleat Safari and Adventure
Park. Still open today,
it is possible to get up close to many of Africa and Asia’s
wild animals at Longleat.
Wiltshire is
also home to many heritage sites including Stonehenge,
the remains of a ring of standing stones which archaeologists believe date back
to between 3000BC and 2000BC. The site and its surroundings were added to the
UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1986.
The largest
area of chalk in Wiltshire is Salisbury Plain, it is used mainly for grazing
and and by the British Army as a training ground. The highest point in the
county is the Tan Hill–Milk Hill ridge in the Pewsey Vale.
The major
football team representing the county is Swindon Town F.C.
Famous
residents of Wiltshire over the years include actress Billie Piper, who was
born in Swindon, and starred in ‘Doctor Who’
as Rose. Other famous residents include; Stephen Gibbons (director), Tom Wisdom
(actor) and Chris Hill (writer).
